Red Door Refuge

Red Door Refuge is our transitional living home for men.

Once a person experiencing homelessness has decided they want to get off the street, they will often face many new obstacles in securing housing and moving forward successfully. They many times don’t meet credit requirements, have a criminal record or insufficient employment or rental history. They may not have funds available for deposits, or have any other number of blemishes in their history that will make getting a place to live difficult if not outright impossible. Red Door Refuge was designed to fill these gaps.

Red Door Refuge has 4 private bedrooms, with each resident having his own room. The bathrooms, kitchen, and living room are shared. The rooms are fully furnished, and all utilities are included. Although residents are responsible for providing their own food, the kitchen is fully stocked with dishes, utensils, cookware, and appliances. The house has a washer/dryer, a computer, free wi-fi, and a small exercise/weight room for the residents’ use. There is a live-in house manager who oversees the day-to-day operation of the house. Although it is conveniently located on the east side of Kansas City near a highway and a public transportation hub, the wooded dead-end street gives it a quiet, peaceful atmosphere.

Residents are required to have income and pay a weekly rent of $100.00, and be substance-free. They can stay from one week to two years, as they work toward obtaining their own permanent housing. While they are at Red Door, we assist them with addressing obstacles such as clearing legal issues, building good credit, budgeting, maintaining stable employment, accessing long-term housing assistance, and finding appropriate permanent housing that will be a good fit.

We strive to be good neighbors at Red Door. Residents participate in monthly community service projects that benefit the immediate neighborhood, such as trash and junk tire cleanups, or helping neighbors with simple home repairs and maintenance or auto repairs. We have a large garden, and donate a lot of the food we grow to our neighbors and nearby food pantries. Our residents are constantly encouraged to be a positive part of not just the family at Red Door, but of the surrounding community as well.
